Active Listening for Coaches

Active Listening for Coaches: Create Deeper Transformations with Subconscious Tools

In the world of coaching, we often hear about the big, transformational tools. Hypnosis, EFT, NLP, subconscious rewiring. These techniques are powerful, and they create lasting change. That’s why we teach them inside The YES SUPPLY Method.

But there’s one skill that is often overlooked. The power of active listening.

Most people think coaching is about giving advice, offering strategies, or handing out a to do list that will solve the problem. But in all honesty, if the client doesn’t experience a subconscious shift first, they won’t take action on advice from another!

Active listening is the foundation of deep transformation. It allows you to go beyond what’s being said on the surface and uncover what’s really happening beneath the words.

Why Most Coaches Focus on Giving Advice (And Why That’s Not Enough)

A lot of coaches come into the space with the instinct to fix things fast. When a client shares a challenge, it’s easy to jump in with solutions.

  • Here’s what you need to do
  • Here’s the action plan
  • Go do this and everything will change

But just because someone knows what to do doesn’t mean they will actually do it.

Why?

Because change doesn’t happen at the level of logic. It happens at the level of the subconscious mind.

People don’t struggle with taking action because they lack strategy. They struggle because their subconscious is keeping them stuck.

Deep down, there is often a fear of failure, fear of judgment, or an old belief telling them they’re not ready yet.

A powerful coach doesn’t just give out strategies. They help clients rewire their subconscious patterns so that taking action finally feels natural.

When you master active listening, you can:

> Quickly identify the subconscious blocks stopping your clients from taking action

> Help them shift their identity so success becomes effortless

> Create deeper, more impactful transformations in every session

The best part? When you become skilled at this, coaching becomes so much easier.

Instead of spending time trying to convince your client to take action, you go straight to the root cause, so the shifts happen naturally.

The NLP Law of Communication: Why Only 7% of Communication is Words

In NLP, we know that communication goes far beyond just words. In fact, words only make up 7% of what is actually being communicated.

The remaining 93% comes from:

  • 38% tone of voice – How something is said carries more weight than the words themselves
  • 55% body language – Facial expressions, posture, and energy can reveal what’s really going on

This means that as a coach, you can’t just listen to what your client says. You have to listen to how they say it.

A client might tell you they are excited about their next step, but if their voice is hesitant or their body tenses up, there is likely a deeper block at play.

This is why active listening and sensory acuity are some of the most powerful skills a coach can develop. When you know how to listen beyond the words, you can uncover the subconscious beliefs, fears, and resistance that are keeping your clients stuck.

And once you identify the real issue, you can help them shift it for good using EFT tapping, NLP techniques, and subconscious reprogramming.

You see, without a deep understanding of active listening, you end up using the tools on a surface level problem, and whilst it will likely have a positive impact, it will not create the transformation you are hoping for!

When you master active listening at the subconscious level, you start to notice things that most people miss.

  • The patterns in their language that reveal hidden limiting beliefs
  • The secondary gain that is truly blocking them
  • The disconnect between what they say and what they do

When you learn to listen beyond the words, you stop offering surface level solutions and start guiding clients through deep, lasting transformations that create real results.

And when your clients experience real breakthroughs, they keep coming back. They tell their friends. Your impact grows. And before you know it, your coaching business is fully booked.

It all starts with learning how to listen at this level. That’s why in The YES SUPPLY Method, we teach it in the very first modules, along with building a trauma sensitive and ethical coaching business, DEI in coaching, and powerful questioning that uncovers what’s really holding clients back.

These aren’t just coaching skills. These are the foundations of leadership.

Listening, Not Mind Reading

One of the biggest mistakes new coaches make is assuming they know what’s holding a client back instead of asking the right questions to uncover the truth.

As a coach, your job is not to mind read or assume. Your job is to:

  1. Notice. Pay attention to shifts in tone, hesitation, or patterns in language (the more you practice your skills the easier this gets)
  2. Ask powerful questions.
Instead of jumping to conclusions, ask:

    • What does that mean to you?
    • How do you know that’s true?
    • What’s would happen if you took action?
  3. Calibrate to behavior. If a client keeps saying they will take action but doesn’t, that is a sign to dig deeper.
  4. Use subconscious tools to shift the block. Once you uncover the real issue, EFT tapping, anchoring, hypnosis, or other subconscious reprogramming tools will release the belief, then install new ones!
