How To Stop Negative Thoughts

How To Stop Thinking Negative Thoughts

Want to know how to stop thinking negative thoughts, or how to stop negative thoughts from manifesting in your life? You are not your thoughts — you’re just the thinker of your thoughts — and don’t have to believe them any longer! Come with me and I’ll show you how to stop having negative thoughts and start replacing them with positive ones!

I used to be somebody whose mind was full of negative thoughts.

I thought I wasn’t pretty enough.

I thought I wasn’t skinny enough. I actually aimed for eating zero calories per day so that I could be skinny enough.

I worked in a string of dead-end minimum wage jobs because I never thought that I was worth being paid more.

I was always worried that when I got something, that I wouldn’t be able to keep it. Even when I achieved something, I worried that I wouldn’t be able to get to the next level.

I remember waking up in the morning, getting out of bed, and looking at myself in the mirror. I’d constantly be saying to myself things like “I hate my skin, I hate my clothes…”

My mind was full of so much negativity — and I didn’t realize it at the time, but our world around us is a mirror — so of course my world reflected all of this negativity as well. There were SO many things I didn’t like about my life and wished I could change!

Stop Thinking Negative Thoughts

Everybody has different reasons why they think negative thoughts, but for me, I think what created a lot of the negativity had to do with how I grew up.

When I was growing up in my teenage years, my mom was in a really abusive relationship. For years and years and years, I was surrounded by negativity, violence, and abuse.

Coming out of that situation, I didn’t have any support, so I had to figure out for myself how to stop thinking negative thoughts.

We learn so many things in school that never really help us, yet no one ever teaches us how we should be treated in relationships, how to manage and improve our emotions, and how to know that we are meant for more and go after it!

As I started to get older and I wanted my life to change, I realized that my outside world and the things I was creating could never change if my inside world didn’t change. I knew that I had to start with my thoughts.

You Are Not Your Negative Thoughts

One thing I discovered was that we’re not our thoughts, we’re the thinker of our thoughts.

Our thoughts do create our reality, but we get to choose which thoughts we allow in our minds.

And so when we can be a curator of our thoughts and choose better-feeling thoughts, we’re going to have a better feeling of reality.

So one of the things I always start with is “What is my YES?”

“What do I want to create?”

“What would my dream life be like?”

“What would I ask for if I knew the answer was going to be YES?”

And my question is… “all I have are negative thoughts?”

Write Down Those Characteristics

I get clear on what my YES is.

And then, when thoughts come into my mind, I gain awareness of them and I ask myself:

“Is this thought going to get me closer to where I want to go, or is it going to pull me further away?”

If the thought will pull me further away, then that’s not a thought that I want to think. So I use a tool called a Pattern Interrupt, (which I’ll explain later in this post) and switch my thought patterns to the ones that are in alignment with my manifestations.

Over the years, I’ve retrained my mind by using conscious and subconscious tools to think thoughts in alignment with what I want, turn my subconscious on autopilot to help me get there!

So Why Do We Think So Many Negative Thoughts?

We think over 60,000 thoughts per day, and over 80% of them are negative.

That’s the typical way that people think — but I believe we can make shifts so that we have more positive than negative thoughts.

If you think about the world around us — the media, the news, shows that we watch, even the gossip that people around us are talking about — most people are talking about negativity.

And that’s because as human beings, we really are designed to survive and not thrive. The filters in our minds are constantly looking for signs of things that could be going wrong to keep us safe.

But one of the things I’ve learned from growing a successful coaching business that impacts people all around the world is that we don’t thrive in “safe.” We’re not reaching our true potential in “safe.”

If we want to reach our true potential and truly be happy, we need to transcend survival mode and get into the energy of THRIVING…

…Which means getting outside of our comfort zone and understanding that the safest thing we can do is create the life that we want.

Over the years, I’ve discovered a ton of amazing tools that have helped me with stopping negative thoughts and become a happy, successful, and positive person.

Stop Thinking Negative Thoughts

How the Mind Works

Before we get into how to stop thinking negative thoughts, let’s get a deeper understanding of the mind.

We have our conscious mind, which is our thoughts that we are consciously aware of.

Then, we have our critical faculty, which either accepts or rejects ideas and thoughts from the outside world.

And then we have our subconscious mind.

Within our subconscious mind are thousands and thousands of thoughts that we’re not even aware of. Some of those thoughts will bubble up to the surface and we’ll have conscious awareness of them, but many of them will not bubble up until we start to explore our subconscious by doing the necessary inner work.

Know that if you want your thoughts to be permanently changed, it’s not just changing what you’re thinking about consciously, but it’s also making a shift on a subconscious level so that the tens of thousands of thoughts that are happening under our awareness are also positive and of a higher vibration.

So if you want to know how to stop thinking negative thoughts, you have to work with the subconscious.

We can do this with tools like Hypnotherapy and Neuro-linguistic Programming to shift how we think and the programming and coding of our minds. (We also teach this in the YES SUPPLY Method!)

Here a few of my favorite tools that will help you understand how to stop thinking negative thoughts.

  1. Use Pattern Interrupting to Stop Negative Thoughts in Their Tracks

Now that you understand a little about the conscious and subconscious mind, know that our thoughts run almost like we’re on a train track.

Our thoughts will loop — we’ll think the same thoughts over and over again — and we’ll think exactly like we did yesterday until we switch that track.

One great way to switch the track is called Pattern Interrupting.

When we start to recognize that we have a pattern of spiraling or a pattern of going down a road of negative thoughts, we can literally interrupt that pattern and switch the thoughts.

Years ago, when I decided I wanted to be a successful coach, I would have negative thoughts like, “Nobody’s gonna listen to me” or “I’ll never be successful…”

…But what I did was, I gained awareness of the thought — I imagined the thought almost like an object — and I would ask myself, “Is this thought going to get me closer to where I want to go?”

If the answer was no, I would literally shoo the thought away like a fly and replace it with a better-feeling thought, like “People WILL want to listen to my story, people WILL want to be coached by me.”

I would then expand on that positive thought and make it even greater, like “I’m going to be a great coach and speaker because I’ve been through a lot, I have a great story, and there are a lot of people who need to hear a story like mine from someone like me.”

And using affirmations and energy work and shifting my beliefs in hypnosis and NLP, I was able to shift my beliefs and believe those things, and once I believed it on the inside, it was only a matter of time until my world reflected it on the outside.

And when we’re interrupting those thoughts, that’s what we call in the YES SUPPLY Method a Pattern Interrupt or a broken state, and it’s one of the best tools for stopping negative thoughts!

  1. Release Internal Conflict

I believe a big reason why we have these negative thoughts is actually that they’re a conversation between two micro-personalities within our subconscious mind.

We create these as we’re growing up, and as adults, they turn into internal conflict because there are literally two sub-personalities that conflict with each other. Within the subconscious mind, they start to have conversations saying that we can or can’t do something or achieve something.

One of the tools we teach in the YES SUPPLY Method is called a Parts Integration. With a Parts Integration, we can take these two parts of the subconscious mind and integrate them back into wholeness.

The more whole we feel, the less we’ll have different parts of ourselves in conflict, fighting with each other, or trying to talk over each other.

I’ve found that the more integrated into wholeness I’ve become, the less I’ve had these internal conflicts and negative thoughts, and I’m able to have a clear, focused, calm mind.

The internal chatter that used to fill my mind is gone now and I feel FREE.

If you want to learn more about Parts Integration, definitely look into this in the YES SUPPLY Method.

  1. Tap Into Your Physiology and Energetic Field to Stop Negative Thoughts

One of my favorite tools that I love to use for stopping negative thoughts is Tapping.

If you have a negative thought or negative belief, it’s often a sign of an energetic imbalance.

Emotional Freedom Technique, or EFT Tapping, rebalances the signals that are being sent to the brain through our energy meridian points to help you feel better in a matter of minutes.

When you have a negative thought, you can use Tapping to tap out that thought and rebalance your energy. Add it to your morning ritual for lasting results!

Here’s a simple tapping ritual you can use to release anxiety and program in supportive, positive thoughts:

Another tip I want to share with you is how your physiology can help you affect your mood.

How you’re standing, how you’re breathing, and the gestures that you do can all affect how happy and confident you feel.

Our state is what creates our behaviors, and our behaviors are what create our results, so sometimes we can use subtle changes in our physiology to shift our mood!

For example, when we think of a happy thought, we smile. So if we smile for 16 seconds, we can actually make ourselves feel happier. When you smile, you’re sending a signal to the muscles in your face, your brain starts to release happy chemicals like dopamine and serotonin.

Try out some of the quick techniques to change your state and change your mood in this video and see how you feel!

  1. Don’t Give Energy to Things That Keep You Feeling Negative

Even though your conscious mind won’t remember everything — you might barely remember what you have for breakfast, lol — your subconscious mind remembers EVERYTHING. It’s imprinting everything you ever see, do, listen to, or experience in your brain.

Every time you watch the news or a negative movie, feed into gossip, or scroll around on Instagram, looking at things that make you feel bad — you are imprinting even deeper negative thoughts and emotions into your mind — so of course it’s going to come out in your thought processes.

Take some time to curate what you’re putting into your mind, and clear out anything that’s not serving you, because it’s really impacting your energetic field.

(It’s kinda like clearing out all the junk food from your shelves so that you’re just left with healthy, vibrant foods!)

Instead, surround yourself with the things that make you feel good!

mind does not process negative

One of the biggest things that I’ve learned is that you’re a reflection of the 5 people you spend the most time with.

So if you’re spending a lot of time with people who are negative, critical, and engaging in gossip, is that helping you move forward?

Remember that your subconscious takes everything personally. If you’re hating on other people, your subconscious thinks you’re saying it about you.

We all know that when you’re talking about other people, it doesn’t feel good. It feels icky.

Start to shift the conversation to what you want to create. Constructively spend your time and don’t surround yourself with criticism.

Also think about the content, podcasts, Instagram accounts you follow, or any other content you consume.

Are you following the people that you most want to be like?

Are you programming your subconscious with the kind of energy you want to experience more of?

Are you consuming content that reflects the kind of life you want to have?

Listen to the things that you love on repeat.

It would be a good idea to subscribe to our YouTube channel, where you can listen to positive content and learn more about the subconscious mind!

  1. Don’t Beat Yourself Up For A Negative Thought

And before I go, let me remind you one more time, love:

You are not your thoughts. You are the thinker of your thoughts.

That voice in your head that tells you that you can’t do something that has NOTHING to do with your potential. Nothing at all.

When you feel a negative thought comes in, recognize that it is not the truth. Just observe the thought, replace it with a thought that aligns with where you want to be, and keep moving towards the person that you are becoming.

Also, remember that personal development is a lasting process — something you have to commit to every day as you learn and grow — and so don’t beat yourself up when you have a negative thought. Congratulate yourself on the fact that you’re getting better and better every day, and focusing on creating a better life!

Whatever you focus on expands!

Stay focused on your goals and trust that with your continued focus, you WILL get there and achieve it.

I’m sending you so much love on your journey!
