What is NLP

What is Neuro Linguistic Programming?

Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a psychological approach that emphasizes how we can use the basic language of our minds to consistently achieve results.

Let’s break down the meaning of Neuro Linguistic Programming:

Neuro — nervous system or mind — what we use to experience the world through our senses, including visual, auditory, kinesthetic, olfactory, gustatory responses.

Linguistic — language and other forms of communication we use to store an experience and give it meaning inside our mind — including pictures, sounds, feelings, smells, tastes, and internal dialogue (or self-talk).

Programming — how we process and take that information in, including the patterns and strategies we run inside of our mind to achieve our goals.

NLP is a body of knowledge that has drawn from many fields — including family therapy, Gestalt therapy, and hypnosis — and it involves modeling success.

What that means is that if we can find an example of a successful person, we can analyze what it is that led to that success, and use that information to create a “model.”

You can then use that model to recreate those results in your own life, as well as teach it to others.

NLP is also used by speakers, marketers, politicians, and really anyone who uses language to influence you to think or act a certain way.

This may sound like a negative thing, but what I love to remind people about is that you’re ALWAYS being programmed by everyone you listen to and all the information you take in — whether that’s from the news, TV and movies, and the people you surround yourself with.

So why wouldn’t you want to understand the language of the mind so that you have a CHOICE about who you want to be, and what kind of beliefs you want to program yourself with?

When you empower yourself to understand how the mind works, and how you can use NLP to create success, there’s no stopping you.

Why Is Neuro Linguistic Programming Called “The Language Of The Mind?”

The mind is the most powerful supercomputer that any of us has access to, and learning Neuro Linguistic Programming is like being handed the user’s manual.

When you learn NLP, you discover powerful techniques that speak directly to your subconscious mind that can make a huge impact on your life.

I remember when I took my first Neuro Linguistic Programming class… I was blown away by the concepts I was learning and how quickly it was possible to make massive shifts using NLP.

But as the training went on, I started to become pissed.

Why wasn’t I taught this in school?

Why did I have to know the angles of an isosceles triangle or the middle name of some random historical figure, but no one ever taught me the language of my mind?

I had spent so many years overcome by negative thoughts, emotions, and memories… and no one had ever shown me the tools to get past them!

If you’re struggling with something similar, watch this video to learn about an NLP technique to heal emotions from the past:

This is why I’m so passionate about sharing Neuro Linguistic Programming with as many people as possible. I believe we should all know how to work with our subconscious minds to be able to create the lives we want.

To understand this, you have to learn how the subconscious mind works.

Neuro Linguistic Programming and the Subconscious Mind

First of all, there are 2.3 million bits of information happening around us at any given moment, but our minds can only handle about 126 bits.

So our minds run the information through a series of filters and deletes, distorts, or generalizes so that we can focus on only what’s important.

Those filters include:

✨ Time

✨ Location

✨ Metaprograms

✨ Language

✨ Memories

✨ Decisions

✨ Beliefs

✨ Values

✨ Identity

…These filters dictate what makes it from the outside world into our neurology.

Our minds take that filtered information and make an internal representation of it that can be visual, auditory, kinesthetic, or auditory digital (which refers to our self-talk).

We don’t process information in words… we process it in symbols. Our minds then change those symbols into language.

When I think of all the memories and ideas we have stored in our minds, I like to think of it as a giant holographic filing cabinet, understanding NLP is like being able to directly sort through those files.

By working with them, we can really shift our beliefs, empower ourselves, and realize that we’re not as limited as we thought we were.

Here’s another important thing to understand:

Your subconscious mind can’t process negatives.

If I say, “don’t think of the purple amethyst crystal,” you’ll think of a purple amethyst crystal, because in order to even comprehend those words, you had to create a picture of it in your mind.

If you’re focused on what you don’t want, you’re constantly creating that picture in your mind… which can affect your behavior, and therefore, your results.

For example, if you’re fearing a breakup and constantly thinking about it, you’re likely to act out behaviors that sabotage your relationship.

This is why in Neuro Linguistic Programming, we focus on the positive, or what we do want, instead of what we don’t want.

What is Neuro Linguistic Programming

What Are Some of the Principles of Neuro Linguistic Programming?

One of the most important principles in NLP that I want to share with you is this:

There is no such thing as failure, only feedback.

NLP takes a willingness to experiment… we have to be willing to try a few things, knowing not all of them will work, and that along the way, we’ll find out what does work.

We never ask what is “broken” in someone — we know that our clients are always doing the best that they can with their current resources and limitations.

Instead, we always look for what is excellent about someone, and see how we can expand that. We see people at their highest potential, and help them take the next steps to get there.

Neuro Linguistic Programming is driven by curiosity.

In fact, NLP was developed by modeling some of the most curious, innovative minds in therapy at the time.

I always remember a story I heard about renowned psychiatrist and hypnotherapist Milton Erickson following his curiosity.

He was walking by a factory, and had a feeling that there was something for him to learn there. When he stepped inside, he noticed that it was absolute chaos and so much noise… and yet all the factory workers seemed to be able to communicate with each other.

So he asked the manager if he could stay and observe, and ended up falling asleep on the factory floor. When he awoke, he realized that he could understand what everyone was saying perfectly clearly — his subconscious mind had learned how to filter out the noise!

John Grinder and Richard Bandler, pioneers of NLP, studied Erickson’s work as well as the work of Virginia Satir and Fritz Perls, and incorporated all of it into the model they developed in the 1970s.

NLP focuses on achievable outcomes.

Before NLP, most forms of therapy did not really focus on outcomes.

With Neuro Linguistic Programming, we focus on certain principles to create achievable outcomes for ourselves and our clients.

How Can You Use Neuro Linguistic Programming?

Neuro Linguistic Programming is one of the most powerful tools I’ve learned, and there are multiple ways I use it in my coaching business.

When I’m working with a client who’s stuck because of negative beliefs, internal conflicts, or something from their past that’s holding them back, I can use NLP to help them resolve and release those beliefs and issues and program in positive ones.

Once you understand Neuro Linguistic Programming, you start being able to pick up on A LOT about someone’s internal representation just by the words they use.

For example, if someone keeps saying things like, “It’s really hard,” or “I’m terrible,” I know that these language patterns are defining the world they live in, and you can tackle those beliefs in a session.

Neuro Linguistic Programming is also about using influential and persuasive language in your speech… which can be very powerful, and attract more clients into your business!

We can also use NLP techniques to lock in positive emotions. This is called Anchoring.

When you create an anchor, you’re creating a neurological connection between a stimulus and a response.

This technique was based in part on a famous experiment you might’ve heard of from Ivan Pavlov.

Pavlov worked with dogs and noticed that when he showed them a steak, they’d salivate. So he decided to try something — he showed them a steak, and at the same time, he would ring a tuning fork.

Eventually, he recognized that he could ring the tuning fork without showing the dogs the steak, and get the same results. They would still salivate!

This spawned the field of behavioral psychology…

…And Neuro Linguistic Programming really took off in popularity once Anchoring was created.

If you’re curious about this NLP technique, check out this video where I teach you how to create an anchor for abundance!

Where Can You Learn Neuro Linguistic Programming?

One of my mentors, Bob Proctor, likes to say that “a fish doesn’t understand it’s in water until it’s out of water.

This was huge for me to understand because after a lot of the things I had been through in life, I had a belief that no one liked me. It was just how I saw the world.

What I didn’t realize was that it was just a limiting belief, and it didn’t have to be real for me. I had that choice.

So if you have thoughts like:

“I’m not lovable…”

“I can’t be successful…”

“I’ll never be able to get that job or start that business…”

You don’t have to carry around those beliefs anymore. You can use simple NLP techniques to shift them and change the way you look at the world.

It all starts with you seeing how much potential you have.
