Subconscious Mind

What is the Subconscious Mind?

If you want to make massive shifts in your life, the most powerful tool you have at your disposal is the subconscious mind! The subconscious mind, also referred to as the unconscious mind, is constantly working behind-the-scenes to create our perception of reality. When you learn how to harness the power of the subconscious mind, you can make profound shifts that go far beyond what’s possible with the conscious mind. Keep reading to learn more!

At any given moment, there are 2.3 million bits of information happening around us… but we are only consciously aware of a very small portion of it.

So what happens to the rest of that information?

It’s run through a series of filters as our mind decides to delete, distort, and generalize what’s coming in.

And that creates reality for us.

When I first started to learn about the subconscious mind, I was blown away.

I realized that I had gone my entire life without understanding how my mind really works. How was it that I had spent all those hours in school memorizing the names of historical figures or doing math, but no one had ever taught me how to use my own mind to my advantage?

But once I did understand the subconscious mind, I was able to start using it as the powerful supercomputer that it is to create the life of my dreams.

I was able to shift out of old identities and old beliefs that were holding me back.

I was able to cultivate the thoughts, behaviours, and actions of the leader, speaker, and coach that I wanted to be.

And I was able to build a multi-million dollar coaching business that impacts people all over the world by showing them how to do the same.

All of this, just by learning how to reprogram my subconscious mind?

Yes, really!

Keep reading to learn all about the subconscious mind — what it is, how it works, and how you can use the power of your subconscious mind to create the life of your dreams.

What is the Subconscious Mind?

The subconscious, also often called the unconscious, refers to the part of the mind that runs the thousands of processes in our minds and bodies that we’re not consciously aware of.

Think about it:

Every day, your heart beats, your lungs breathe, and so many psychological processes occur automatically, without our conscious awareness of them.

Your subconscious mind also stores every sense, impression, thought, and impulse that has ever reached your brain. This includes subliminal perceptions, repressed memories and emotions, as well as deep-seated desires, beliefs, and fears.

Most of us walk through life on autopilot, unaware that our subconscious mind is running the show… re-enacting the same habits, routines, and rituals based on what has been programmed over our lifetime.

The History of the Subconscious Mind

So where did the concept of the subconscious mind come from?

When you study hypnosis within the YES SUPPLY METHOD, you’ll learn that the earliest known references to methods of “suggestion” were found on clay tablets from over 2,000 years ago. This shows that many cultures were aware of the human ability to shift into a hypnotic state to work with the subconscious for millennia.

But it wasn’t until the late 1800s that psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud started to describe the layers of consciousness using the terms pre-conscious, unconscious, and conscious. His work emphasized the thought processes that happen below our threshold of awareness, which laid the foundation for our understanding that our conscious mind is limited in its ability to hold information.

Then, in the 1960s, psychoanalysts such as Carl Jung took these concepts even further, explaining how thoughts lose their emotional energy and become subliminal as a way of keeping our conscious mind decluttered and efficient.

Today, our understanding of the subconscious mind keeps evolving, and we still have a long way to go to understand its power fully.

How Does the Subconscious Mind Work?

From the moment you’re born, your subconscious mind is constantly recording everything that happens all around you. You may not consciously remember it all, but your subconscious mind does.

In fact, until about the age of 7 or 8, you actually haven’t developed a critical faculty yet — that’s the part of your mind that accepts or rejects information — which means that you are basically a walking subconscious mind!

During this time, everything that happens to you goes in as fact — which means that your parents, your teachers, your friends, the TV shows and movies you watch — they’re all constantly programming your perception of the world.

In fact, the effects of our environment on shaping our subconscious can be seen from infancy, when we start to both “download” and “uninstall” programs for the sake of efficiency… for example, we subconsciously learn to only give meaning to certain speech sounds as we learn the language spoken by those around us.

We also learn to take on the habits of those around us in order to survive and thrive in the environment we’re born into.

The subconscious mind first and foremost wants to keep us safe — so the beliefs that you pick up in childhood about what it takes to not to lose the love of your caregivers can have a powerful effect on your future when these subconscious beliefs turn into limitations that stop you from reaching your biggest goals.

Here’s an example:

When I was growing up, I was living in a single-parent household where my first memories around money were of my parents arguing about child support.

Since I didn’t understand what was happening, these experiences were recorded in my subconscious mind as a limiting belief: If you talk about money, people will hate you.”

This was a belief that I carried for a long time and it definitely no longer served me as an adult. I was so afraid to talk about money that I’d be afraid to ask for a raise at my job… or I’d pay for entire dinners with friends rather than have to bring up splitting the cheque.

It wasn’t until I learned the tools to work with the subconscious mind I teach today — like Neuro Linguistic Programming, hypnosis, and TIME Techniques — that I started being able to identify and shift these beliefs so that they no longer held me back in my life OR in my business.

There’s no way I could’ve built a multi-million dollar coaching business if I was still subconsciously terrified to talk about money, right?

This is why we often secretly self-sabotage — because our subconscious mind will continue to do whatever it takes to keep us safe — but our greatest potential lives outside of our comfort zone.

How to Reprogram Your Subconscious Mind

When I started learning about Neuro Linguistic Programming, I discovered that there are logical levels to the subconscious mind that we need to understand in order to make massive changes in our lives.

Take a look at this chart to see what I mean:

subconscious mind

In NLP, we make shifts at the Identity level, and those changes trickle down to affect our values and beliefs, capabilities, behaviours, and environment.

We tend to only be consciously aware of the bottom three levels — capabilities, behaviours, and environment — whereas the top levels tend to be happening at the subconscious level.

Usually, when a person decides to make a change in their life, they set a goal to change their behaviour.

They might say, I want to get in shape, so I’ll go to the gym three times a week.”

If you’ve ever set a fitness goal, you probably already know what happens in most cases, right? The goal quickly fizzles when the person finds it too challenging to make it to the gym three times a week.

This is because when we just try to change our behaviours, it can feel like a lot of effort.

But when you learn how to work with the subconscious mind to make shifts at the Identity level, you start to shift your self-image, or how you see yourself.

In the example above around fitness goals, if you were to program the identity of a healthy, fit, active person, it would ripple down into your values, capabilities, and behaviours… and it would start to feel much easier to build the habit of making it into the gym.

You can program the identity of a successful coach, leader, influencer — whatever your dream may be — and those changes will filter down and start to show up in your thoughts, behaviours, and actions.

You start to see how worthy you are. How talented you are. How capable you are of doing anything you want. Your habits will change naturally when you start to see yourself as a person who is worthy of having everything you dream of.

Another tool that I love to use to imprint these new beliefs is hypnosis.

Hypnosis allows you to bypass the conscious mind and speak directly to the subconscious mind, making powerful suggestions that can help you shift your entire reality.

Why is this important?

Because your subconscious beliefs turn into your thoughts, your thoughts turn into your behaviours, and your behaviours turn into your actions, which determine your results.

Goal-Setting with the Power of Your Subconscious Mind

When it comes to setting and achieving goals, your subconscious mind can be your biggest ally.

The subconscious mind is constantly working to solve the problems that we serve to it, and has a remarkable ability to quickly serve us solutions that we never would’ve thought about consciously.

This is why it’s SO important to get clear on your goals and give your subconscious mind the specifics of that goal.

Once we are tuned into a goal, our subconscious immediately begins nudging us towards the ideas, people, and opportunities that will make it possible.

In fact, I often notice that what holds people back the most is just NOT setting a goal, or not being specific enough.

For example, sometimes a YES SUPPLY student will say, I want to make more money.

“More” could mean just finding $5 in your jeans pocket… or even a penny on the ground.

But when you say, “I’d like to have $10,000 in the bank by March 31st,” your subconscious can go to town, serving you ideas that you may never have thought of had you not set that concrete goal.

YES SUPPLY Method

Within the YES SUPPLY METHOD, we also dive deep into reprogramming subconscious beliefs that may hold you back from achieving those goals.

If deep down, you believe that it’s not safe for you to have that $10,000 in your bank account, then you’ll keep getting in your own way.

We use powerful techniques like NLP, hypnosis, TIME Techniques, and EFT Tapping to work with the subconscious and help you step into the identity of the version of you living your YES life.

Whether your dream is to be a standout coach, a sought-after speaker and influencer, a leader of a wildly successful business, the YES SUPPLY METHOD teaches you all the tools to make that dream a reality.
