What To Do When You’re Overwhelmed With Things To Do

Full disclosure: I’m procrastinating on jumping into working on the things on my to-do list as I sit here and write this.

I wanted to share with you a quick tip that I do when I feel overwhelmed with all of the things I have to tackle.

When you know you only have a few hours to get things done, it’s easy to get overwhelmed and experience a block. It’s kind of like writer’s block, but for getting things done.

When you feel like this, it’s walking a dangerous line. Why? Because when you don’t know what to do you might say to yourself, well I’ll go on facebook or a blog to get inspired and I’ll know what to do next.

This is BAD.bad.Bad.

Why? Because that only leads to devouring more content (and a few cute animal videos) before realizing that 2 hours have gone by, and you have done nothing but read BuzzFeed’s top 50 list of recipes you can make with whip cream. The time you have to work on things has lessened and the pressure and overwhelm increase 10fold.

This super easy trick helps me get through my blocks and it works.

What to do when you’re overwhelmed:

I simply get out my day planner (a notebook or sheet of paper works too) and write out ALL of the things I need to get done. This can be anything and everything.

Then I go through and write numbers beside each task, based on the order of priority they take.

I prioritize my list in terms of importance, asking myself :

• Will this help drive sales?

• Will this grow my business?

• Will this help me get the results I’m after

• Is this a necessity that NEEDS to get done.

This is how I know if something is important.

I after do a little bit of shifting if deadlines are important I know what is important AND time-sensitive.

• If something is due ASAP and I know there’s a time crunch, and it’s an important task, it moves up the list.

Next I rewrite them out in order so it’s all organized for me, and I cross out the last 4 things on my list. If they’re ALLLLLLL the way down at the bottom, they are not likely the things that are making a serious impact for me.

If some of those tasks include self-care, like a mani, or a fun day, I move these to times or days I have set aside for myself where I can relax.

So that’s it. When in doubt, write a list. This is what you can do when you feel overwhelmed with all of the things you have to do. Believe me, when you have it all listed out, and you know what is truly important in your business, it’s much easier to accomplish.

  1. Yes!! I have so many lists it’s almost embarrassing. They really do help you prioritize though, and it feels so good to cross things off.
